It Has Been Revealed That Most YouTube Videos Go Unwatched

A published report has revealed that a vast majority of videos uploaded to YouTube are not watched, and only less than 1% of them surpass 100,000 views.

PEX, a Los Angeles-based research and analytics firm, shared striking results about YouTube based on its observations on social media platforms worldwide. PEX republished its 2018 report titled "State of YouTube" for the year 2019.

According to PEX's 2018 report, owned by Google, YouTube had shown that only 0.64% of videos had received over 100,000 views. Looking at the data for 2019, there was not a significant increase, with only 0.77% of videos reaching 100,000 views on YouTube.

More than 55.4% of videos uploaded to YouTube do not exceed 1,000 views.

According to PEX's research report, the rate of videos surpassing 100,000 views is quite low. The report also highlights the significant number of videos with low views. One of the most striking statistics in the report is that 88.4% of videos uploaded to YouTube received fewer than 1,000 views.

It's important to note that this analysis is based on publicly shared content as of December 31, 2019.

Another noteworthy finding from the report is the increased interest in music videos in 2019, which gained more value. In 2019, music videos accounted for 22% of the views on YouTube, showing a 2% increase from 2018. The interesting aspect of this statistic is that only 5% of videos on YouTube are music videos, yet they still receive significant attention.

The distribution of videos on YouTube is as follows:

  • 10% in the Entertainment category
  • 24% in the People and Blogs category
  • 5% in the Film and Animation category
  • 37% in the Gaming category
  • 19% in other categories

In 2019, videos with over 1 billion views accounted for 83%, and most of them were music videos and songs. This rate was only 1.5% for entertainment videos and 0.5% for gaming videos.

The prevalence of amateur YouTube channels contributes significantly to these statistics. Many YouTube creators fail to consider essential aspects of content creation, such as video SEO, in-video visuals, copyright issues related to visuals and music, and more. Proper attention to these elements is crucial for video visibility and recommendations on YouTube. To succeed on YouTube, it's essential to understand the platform's algorithm, create content with appropriate titles, descriptions, and other factors. Many successful YouTubers work with large agencies and production companies, making it clear that starting a YouTube channel is an investment. Don't hesitate to seek professional support if you aim to achieve success on YouTube.
