Facebook Initiates the Process of Appointing a Representative in Turkey.

Just a day before the implementation of the Facebook ad ban, Facebook has decided to appoint a representative in Turkey.

According to a statement from Facebook,

"We believe that freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, and we are committed to protecting and promoting these values globally. In fact, more than half of the people in Turkey rely on Facebook to stay connected with friends and family, express their opinions, and grow their businesses.

We have been closely following the developments related to Law No. 5651, recently revised in Turkey, which introduced new obligations for social media platforms, from day one. Like some other companies affected by the law, we have decided to initiate the process of appointing a legal entity as a representative in Turkey in accordance with the new regulations. We want to emphasize once again the importance we attach to our platform being a place where users can exercise their freedom of expression rights.

Our decision does not change Facebook Community Standards or the processes for reviewing content removal requests by government authorities. Therefore, we would like to state that if there is insistence on our part to act in a manner that is not in accordance with these principles, we will withdraw our representative. We will continue to review and evaluate requests from the government in accordance with our responsibilities stemming from our membership in the Global Network Initiative and in line with the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

Furthermore, we will continue to share the details of the content we restrict in accordance with our existing transparency processes.

We want the public to be aware that our commitment to protecting freedom of expression and other human rights of people living in Turkey remains unchanged.
