E-Commerce Increased its Customers by 1.5 Million in the Last Year

The continuously growing online shopping- sector, driven by the strong interest of young people and working women, achieved significant growth with a gain of 1.5 million customers in the last year. According to the Household Information Technologies Usage Survey conducted by TUIK, the percentage of those who ordered goods, services, or shopping online increased from 34.1% in 2019 to 36.5% in 2020.

Güçlü Kayral, Co-Founder of Avantajix.com, who pays cash to those who shop from more than 500 virtual stores, recalled that the research was conducted on 60 million people in the 16-74 age group. He said, "The 2.4% increase covers 1,440,000 people. When we convert TUIK's percentage figures into the number of people, it turns out that the number of e-commerce customers, which was 20,460,000 in 2019, increased to 21,900,000 in 2020. Male customers make up 12,080,000 of online shopping customers, while women make up 9,820,000."

TUIK also conducted a detailed study on the products and services purchased by Turkish consumers online. It was noted that both women and men spent the most on clothing in their online purchases. According to the data from the Online Shopping survey, the product categories that were ordered or purchased online were dominated by clothing, shoes, and accessories, with 68.5% for women and 54.2% for men.

For women, cosmetics, beauty, and health products followed clothing with 31.5%, and printed books and magazines with 30.2%. In men's online shopping habits, after clothing, they spent the most on online food with 24.1%, followed by printed books, magazines, and newspapers with 22.5%.

One of the most interesting aspects of the research was the absence of mobile phones, computers, and electronics, which have traditionally held the top spot in online shopping, from the top three spending categories in 2020.
